World Championship 2008

The World Chess Championship will be held from October 14 to November 02, 2008 in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn , between Viswanathan Anand ( India ) and Vladimir Kramnik ( Russia ).

The match will consist of twelve games, played under classical time controls, in the period from October 14 to October 30, 2008. If there is a tie at the end of these games a tiebreak will be played on November 02, 2008. The prize fund, which will be split equally between the players, is 1,5 million Euro (approximately 2,1 million US Dollars) including taxes and FIDE licensee fees.

Viswanathan Anand (38) and Vladimir Kramnik (33) are the two outstanding personalities in chess today. The world championship match between them is keenly anticipated by chess fans all over the world. It is part of a 120-year tradition of chess history, which includes matches like Capablanca-Alekhine, Fischer-Spassky, Kasparov-Karpov and Kramnik-Topalov.

The reigning and undisputed World Champion Anand won his title in September 2007 at the World Championship tournament in Mexico City . Kramnik, who was undefeated in his three world championship matches, became second in this double round robin event.

28/8/08 A New Season Approaches

Greetings, as another new chess season approaches......hopefully you`ve enjoyed the summer break. I just about managed to dodge most of the summer showers on my recent visit to Northumberland.
This season we have two qualifier matches in the MCCU counties Open competition. We start with what should be an interesting/challenging fixture against an improving Staffordshire team, on Sat 1st November.
I know its some time away yet, but I`m trying to get some provisional idea of player availablility...and give some advance notice. I`d be grateful therefore if you could let me know asap if you expect to be available for this match. If you know of other players who might be interested, please let me know or pass on this message.....including those not on the web. My tel No is 0161-485-2413
All are welcome to play and we`re always looking for new players for our squad, whether regular or occasional.
As usual, we`ll be doing shared transport for convenience, to keep down costs, etc.....so any help with that would be appreciated.
This season we will not be entering a U175 team, due to the difficulties we had last year, so hopefully this will help us and we`ll have a more successful season. Mick Norris will be Open team match captain, as per last season.... I`ll be doing some admin & team selection, etc..
It should be noted that we currently have three matches in three weeks in November involving various MCF county/league teams, so we start with a fairly busy schedule.....this includes `celebratory` friendly matches against Merseyside on Sunday 9th November I believe...to be played in Liverpool (John Reyes & Mick Norris are the contacts for those)....
And on the 15th Nov we have our openning fixture for our U150 team v Notts, which usually provides us with a fair challenge & entertaining tussle, against one of the MCCUs stronger teams.....contact Jon Lonsdale if interested....<jon@jlonsdale.net> (who will no doubt be contacting U150 players in due course..)

Regards for now,
Dave P
