Hi all,

The journey is over for another season following defeat on Saturday in the County Championship Preliminary Qualifiers versus Essex losing 11.5 - 4.5.

I'd like to announce the end of my tenure as Open Captain and finish with a summary of the 4 matches that were played this season.

1st Match vs Derbyshire - We opened against newcomers Derbyshire to the Open Counties. Probably the weakest of the 4 counties we expected this to be a must win. It proved a little too close for comfort with Derbyshire taking us to the wire eventually coming down to Richard Beach's match. Where Richard sensationally managed to draw what looked to be a lost R+R+2P vs R+R ending. Manchester finally won it 8.5 - 7.5

2nd Match vs Staffordshire - We played this match at a neutral venue at Holmes Chapel proving a very amicable arrangement for all players concerned from both sides. Again this match teetered on a knife edge - both sides evenly matched. We ended up losing the battle for the top boards, holding our own on the middle boards and winning on the bottom boards. Towards the latter stages in the match Harry had a drawn pawn endgame and Mick approached me to ask if Harry should go for the win as he felt he could. In hindsight it's probably best to just allow players to take a draw rather than going "all out" for a win which can backfire as it did in this case. For me this perfectly summarised just how close the match was for all concerned. We narrowly lost the match 8.5 - 7.5

3rd Match vs Warkwickshire - Played at the Newcastle-under-Lyme Bridge Club which I'd like to say is a fantastic venue to play at. Comfortable and within a reasonable distance for both sides. This match was probably the least close of all of the first 3 matches although we managed to hold 5.5-5.5 on the top 11 boards we lost the battle on the bottom boards. We eventually lost the match 9.5 - 6.5.

4th Match vs Essex - We had to travel quite a distance to our encounter with Essex. Roughly 250+ mile round trip to Syston in Leicestershire to the Syston & District Social Club. With the derby match Man Utd vs Man City and Nottingham Congress on the same day in hindsight it probably wasn't the best idea to have played this county match on this day. I don't feel that the final result does justice to our overall play for the match or in fact the campaign as a whole. Many of the games that were lost we were I felt winning in but were unfortunately unable to capitalise.

Due to the various challenges (clashing congress', the infamous derby match [we all know between who] etc.) experienced I was unfortunately unable to field as strong a side as I would have liked for this match but felt that at the very least if I could get a few juniors on board and give them some county experience we could take something positive from the match and possibly if everyone was on their A-game win the match. Unfortunately this wasn't to be and late in the day a couple of the games that looked safe were lost. Eventually we succumbed to a very strong Essex side that saw them fielding IM Lawrence Trent on board 1 - 11.5 - 4.5
Hopefully see you all soon and best of luck for the rest of the season.
Kind Regards,
James Murphy
