Manchester Juniors go to Spain

Children from Three C’s Chess Club and Manchester Junior Chess travelled to Spain to take on their junior counterparts in Chess Club Xadrez Galego, in Vigo, Northern Spain. The trip was the brain child of former MCF President, Phil Adams, who moved to Vigo on his retirement. Steve Rigby of Three C’s and Julian Clissold of Manchester Junior Chess organised the Manchester end of the event.
The children played two matches against Vigo, with the final result being drawn, reflecting the closely fought match.

A full report of the event will be sent to the MCF Council and to Manchester City Council, both organisations having supported the event. Next March there is a return match in Manchester. Children not only played in two matches, there were also cultural visits and a Rapidplay over the five day period. This is what one of the children said about the trip:

“When we got to Vigo it was lovely, although I was a bit scared because everybody spoke a different language to English. The chess was brilliant because my opponent knew a little English so they near enough knew what I was talking about. I won one of the rounds of chess and everyone did brilliantly because our team drew with the Vigo team, but because we were the away team we got first place, we all got a medal each, and took the trophy home too.
When it was the second round, some of us got to meet a Lady International Master from Spain. She was really nice and kind; she also went through my second round game with me and said it was an excellent game because I won it too. On Wednesday night we had a Blitz Tournament; it was extremely fast, because we only had three minutes on the clock each! It was great. The whole time we were in Vigo, we were having fun and that was the main thing.”
Jennifer Neil Age 11.
With thanks to Julian Clissold for Juniors data.
