Manchester Chess Federation
Chess in the Greater Manchester area

Your President

In March 2004, the Manchester and District Chess Federation (MDCA) and the Greater Manchester County Chess Association (GMCCA) came together to form the Manchester Chess Federation (MCF).
The term ‘federation’ is particularly apposite, with the spirit, history and constitutional obligations and aspirations of both the MDCA and GMCCA living on and served by the MCF.
In common with other parts of the country, Manchester has seen a fall in chess interest from the post-Fischer heights of the mid-seventies. It is doubtful that we will ever regain all of the ground lost since then, now that we find ourselves with ever-increasing leisure options competing for ever-diminishing leisure time.
The outlook is far from pessimistic, though.
Greater Manchester have been County Champions in two of the past four Seasons, with Lancashire (many of whose players feature in MCF clubs) the reigning champions.
The area can also boast the current English Champion in Stephen Gordon of 3Cs.
The MCF will continue to work with other interested parties, to maintain Manchester as an area renown for outstanding chess, to increase the opportunities available to our players and to provide a chess environment worthy of our great city.
Matthew Pollard
President.
