Bolton Easter Congress
Bolton Easter Congress 10th – 12th April 09
106 competitors attended the 2009 Bolton Easter congress, held at the Excel Centre.
In the Open section, Mike Surtees beat tournament favourite IGM Stuart Haslinger in round 2, with black. Mike had the advantage in the endgame and converted this into the win. He was the outright leader by one point entering the final round. However a final round loss to Martin Mitchell resulted in a tie for 1st place, with Martin and Stuart.
Five competitors shared 1st place in the Major and two players were joint winners in the Knights. There was also a tie for first place in the Busy Persons 10 minute blitz competition.

U155 grading prize was shared by Nathan Taylor, Bolton (151), Mick Norris, Bury (150), Malcolm French, Widnes (141) and Stuart Bainbridge, Bolton area (137) with 4/6 winning £7:50 each

U110 grading prize of £30 was won by Brian Slater, Bolton area (97) with 3.5/6

Bury Rapidplay 2009
MORE than 90 chess “mates” from across the north of England and Wales descended on Bury at the weekend.
The 15th annual Bury Rapidplay Chess Congress took place at Elton Vale Sports Club on Sunday 6th December.
Competitors contested six rounds of cut-throat chess at a maximum of one hour for each game for £660 prize money.
Among the players was a woman from Telford who overcame a breakdown on the motorway to make it in time for the second round.
In the open section, no-one emerged unbeaten. The winner was Richard Beach, from Stockport, who triumphed in five of his six games. Runner-up was Ali Jaunooby.
The Under 170 grade section prize was shared by Paul Evans, Nick Barnaby, Richard Burton, Paul Jackson and James Bowler. The Under 130 Section prize went to Dennis Davies, with a perfect 6/6 score. Second was Angel Gonzales.
The Lodwig Gruchlik Memorial Trophy, for the highest scoring Bury player, went to Jim Litherland, who also won the Under 160 grade-prize.
The event was sponsored by Metcalfe & Co Accountants of Bury, and insurance group Winterthur Life.

Stockport CC Xmas Social
Stockport Chess Clubs 2009 annual Christmas Lightning `Social`, was well attended and nicely hosted as usual by Peter Taylor. The pictures show off the clubs silverware, including club competition trophies, Stockport league & Manchester league trophies.
